Tax audits: best practices

An audit notice leaves fifteen days to prepare. Documents in order, or boxes to dig through: it's often that window, more than the figures themselves, that decides how the audit goes.

One Monday morning, Aïcha receives a general accounting audit notice. The tax administration announces its visit to Société Alpha in fifteen days, to review several fiscal years.

Aïcha has nothing to hide. But as she searches for the documents, she starts to worry. Some purchase invoices are in boxes, others in a former accountant's emails. Lease contracts are nowhere to be found. And no one knows how to export the accounting records file from the software.

"On the day of the visit, Aïcha receives the auditor alone. She answers from memory, promises documents she can't find, and lets several points go unexplained."

A few weeks later, the adjustment notice arrives. Much of the amount could have been justified. But the documents were missing, and the deadline to respond had nearly run out.

A tax audit is not a punishment

In Cameroon, the tax system is self-declaratory: the company declares its own taxes, and the administration verifies them. A tax audit is therefore a normal step in a company's life. What makes the difference isn't the absence of errors — it's the ability to justify quickly what was declared.

A few useful markers, from the verified taxpayer charter

15d

Advance notice — for a general audit, the notice is sent at least 15 days before the first visit.

3m

A capped duration — on-site operations are generally limited to 3 months.

⚖

The right to be assisted — you may be accompanied by a tax advisor throughout the audit.

30d

A deadline to respond — after the adjustment notice, you have 30 days to present your observations.

📄

Accounting readiness — since 2026, for computerized accounting, the accounting records file must be handed over as soon as the audit begins.

Best practices, before and during the audit

Keep documents in order, all year round. Invoices, contracts, statements, returns and receipts — filed and accessible; accounting records must be kept for 10 years.

Keep obligations up to date. Monthly and annual returns filed on time, taxes paid, figures consistent between accounting and returns.

Prepare the audit as soon as the notice arrives. Use the notice period to gather documents, review sensitive points, and designate a single point of contact.

Never face the audit alone. A tax advisor knows the procedure, your rights, and what needs justifying — helping you respond precisely, without improvising.

✓

Respond in writing and on time. Every disputed point justified by documents, within 30 days — a well-argued response can remove part of the adjustments.

The same audit, well prepared

Let's revisit Aïcha's story, this time with good practices and support in place.

Before the notice
Société Alpha's documents are filed throughout the year, returns kept up to date.
As soon as notified
Aïcha calls her advisor; documents gathered, accounting records file ready.
During the visit
The auditor gets prompt answers; her advisor handles the technical points.
After the notice
The points raised are reviewed and justified in writing, on time.

The audit closes with no unpleasant surprise. Aïcha goes back to what she does best: growing her business.

What this changes in practice

Documents in order — filed and accessible records: you answer every request without searching.

Obligations up to date — returns and deadlines met: fewer points to justify, less risk.

Audit preparation — a file ready before the visit, sensitive points identified in advance.

Expert support — Galaxy Conseils by your side, from the audit notice through to the response to the adjustment.

"And in your organization? If an audit notice arrived tomorrow, could you gather all the documents from your last few fiscal years within fifteen days?"

If the answer is no, now is the time to prepare — not the day of the visit.
